Concordia’s Carolyn Lynch Steps Up with SES During Cyclone Alfred

Saturday 15 Mar

Carolyn Lynch, a dedicated staff member of Concordia Lutheran College, recently took on another role, swapping College compliance duties for community service with the State Emergency Service (SES). Joining the SES in January, Carolyn faced her first major challenge during ex Cyclone Alfred's sweep across the Darling Downs.

Carolyn’s decision to join the SES stems from her recent ability to dedicate time to causes she believes in. "I've always wanted to give back. Now, with my schedule allowing, I can actually do something about it," she said.

Her volunteer work saw her involved in essential operations, including sandbagging and assisting the chainsaw crew, as well as providing support to those left vulnerable by the weather.

The experience wasn’t without its hurdles. Carolyn expressed some frustration at not being able to do more due to her current training level. However, she said the team made it easy. "The local SES crew are a great bunch. I've not just learned life-saving skills but also gained new friends at our Tuesday night training sessions."

An important part of her role was helping older residents who lacked immediate family or community support. "It was good to know I could help lessen their stress," she said.

Carolyn was initially inspired to volunteer alongside a friend and by watching the SES at work. Looking forward, she is eager to get more involved, particularly with the heights crew. "There’s a lot to learn, like the Yosemite Bowline for securing tarps to roofs. I’m already getting the hang of the Granny's Glasses Down knot for lifting items."

During the response to Cyclone Alfred, the SES team’s preparedness and communication was appreciated by Carolyn. "We were constantly updated on the situation, which made us feel informed and prepared," she said.
